I don’t think government has the right to force anything on us but I do believe if you are going to be a responsible gun owner and a law abiding citizen with a concealed gun, you owe it to yourself and your community to train, train, train and then train some more. People make bad decisions because they get into situations they are not prepared for. You gotta get out of your comfort zone and go to those deep dark places and prepare. If your situational awareness is on point, you will keep yourself from ever getting into bad situations or a bad shoot more times then not. I’ve carried a concealed handgun most of my adult life. Only ever had to pull it out of the holster out of fear 1 time. Looking at a property we were going to buy and a crazy dog got out of the neighbors yard and was charging my son and I. He was 7 at the time. My gun was out and I moved in front of my son before I even had a conscious thought to do so. Training makes everything better.. Luckily the dog was stoped by the owner but I still need to take a knee and vomit while I caught my breath and tried to calm down. That’s how you know you actually hit the “fight or flight” response your body brings on when bad things are happening. Kinda different for different people but I totally got tunnel vision and everything around me slowed down. Not the response I was looking for but you will learn to work through it with the proper training. Oh yeah, did I mention you should train?

Mike, I love your channel and I especially love this video. I can't help but wonder if you could benefit from taking your own advice here (3 years later, and from an internet rando, lol). We do what we're trained to do. You reinforce that message a ton, because it's the truth. When it comes to encouraging students to speak up for themselves, I wonder, did you ever, or do you now, make time to practice this? People are terrible at speaking up for themselves, and you're absolutely right about men training in combat being pretty unlikely to do so naturally. If taking ownership of one's own needs in sparring were trained, I bet you'd see a lot more of it. I defintely agree that there should be no stigma associated with not doing so, however. Recognition and understanding that failure to speak up for oneself is necessary, because it will happen, but we definitely can't create a culture of shame around human nature.

You're right, I don't really know how to fight. But I'm looking for something I can carry with me as a woman who takes her dog out at night time. I live in Australia - so we can't carry guns, pepper spray/gel, or tasers. It sucks. We're not even allowed to carry those key chains that are acrylic and are sometimes shaped like a cat with pointy ears that you can use as knuckle dusters (which is fine with me, I don't think they make great self defense tools anyway, I've practiced with them). I could carry a knife, but if I ever had to use it that's a way bigger possible legal issue for me, as well as a moral decision about how willing I am to use something that is potentially deadly to defend myself, and the consequences of an uno reverse where my hypothetical attacker got his hands on my knife are very serious. If you have any suggestions I would be VERY open to them. I am looking into starting BJJ and doing some women's self defense courses (I don't feel like they can stand alone hence wanting to combine the BJJ to get some practice fighting under my belt). I already have decent situational awareness and carry one of those obnoxiously loud personal safety alarms that has a flashing light on it, and always let someone know when I leave my apartment at night for a walk, where I am going, and I let them know when I'm back - but I feel like that's all standard practice as a woman. I so wish I could get pepper gel, but Australia's laws are pretty stupid about our rights to carry things like that in my humble opinion.
